This pattern was designed by William Morris in anticipation of the opening of the Merton Abbey Textile Factory in 1881. The pattern was designed to be decorated by the indigo discharge method. Morris’s use of paired animals amid fantastical foliage illustrates his interest in medieval European textile motifs.
