By the 18th century the custom of kissing under mistletoe was seen as a popular and accepted sign of love and romance. A woman could not refuse a kiss if she stood under a “kissing sphere” of mistletoe during the holidays. A woman who did not receive a kiss indicated that she would be unlucky in love for a year. Considered a pledge of marriage, a kiss under the mistletoe signified a serious commitment.
